TEACHING TO A HIGHER STANDARD

HUMANITIES

Teaching the Humanities at Gidea Park

Back to Curriculum overview

The Humanities help our pupils make sense of the complex world we all live in. Together they bring real world issues into the classroom and help pupils to understand the past and how it affects us today, as well as what is happening in their local environment and beyond.

We aim to make history, geography and RE interesting, exciting and relevant. The Humanities teach us about the world we live in and how we interact with our planet and the people in it. Our world is an amazing place and at Gidea Park Prep we want the pupils to be enthused with learning about our planet and its past, present and future.

In history lessons pupils learn why things happened and what the consequences were. This can lead to discussions about citizenship, which we consider to be a vital part of their overall learning journey.

Religious education enables children to investigate and reflect on some of the most fundamental questions asked by people.  The School is an extraordinarily diverse religious and cultural community.

Geography helps to make sense of the complex world we live in. Pupils learn where places are, how landscapes are formed and how people and their environment interact.

During all humanities lessons pupils are encouraged to ask questions, follow enquiries and use their evaluation and reasoning skills. The pupils venture out into the locality on geographical field trips, to places of worship and they also go on historical adventures.

“The calling of the humanities it to make us truly human in the best sense of the word.”

— J. Irwin Miller
